Plan for the light—and the way home

Check the sunrise or sunset time for your date and arrive early. A colorful sky doesn’t always mean the sun is visible from that viewpoint: ridges, trees, and the season change the angle.

For hikes, bring a headlamp, layers, and an offline route. Stay on marked trails and inside viewing barriers. Respect park hours and gates.

Researched October 6, 2026. This is a viewing guide, not a statement that every road, trail, tower, or venue is currently open. Hike lengths are round trip where stated. Morning/evening landscape-light entries are our scenic picks; they may not show the sun itself. Thunder Hill and Rough Ridge are farther High Country outings.

Sunrise & sunset

Waterrock Knob

Parkway MP 451.2 · west of Asheville
Drive-up overlook; optional steep summit hike

The large parking area offers broad mountain views without a summit hike. A strong option for either end of the day.

High elevation means cold and wind. The visitor-center opening hours are not the same as road access.

Location & planning details →
Sunrise & evening color

Cowee Mountain Overlook

Parkway MP 430.7
Drive-up

Layered ridges and a wide open panorama. NPS describes a southeast-facing view: favor morning light or sunset color across the mountains rather than expecting the sun to drop straight ahead.

Check the seasonal sun direction and road status.

Location & planning details →
Sunrise

Tanbark Ridge Overlook

Parkway near Asheville
Drive-up

An east-facing overlook just north of Asheville, recommended by NPS for sunrise. A convenient choice when you want morning mountain views without a hike.

Use the signed pull-off; do not park in the roadway. Check Parkway access before an early start.

Location & planning details →
Sunrise & sunset

Craggy Gardens visitor-center area

Parkway MP 364
Drive-up views

Mountain views close to the visitor-center parking area, with no need to commit to a summit hike.

Check road and facility closures separately; the picnic area has had a separate closure.

Location & planning details →
Sunset

Jump Off Rock

Laurel Park · near Hendersonville
Very short walk from parking

A convenient mountain-view stop when you want a scenic evening without a long hike.

Park hours are posted as sunrise to sunset by the tourism office. Confirm town rules and leave within permitted hours; do not plan an after-dark stay.

Location & planning details →
Sunrise & sunset

Craggy Pinnacle

Craggy Gardens area
Short uphill hike

The summit has 360-degree views. Allow time for the climb, choosing the Pinnacle trailhead rather than assuming every Craggy Gardens trail leads there.

Stay inside designated viewing areas; bring a headlamp for a permitted dawn or dusk hike.

Location & planning details →
Sunrise & sunset

Black Balsam Knob

Black Balsam Road off Parkway MP 420.2
Hike on the Art Loeb Trail

An open high-country bald with wide views. Choose your route and turnaround point before setting out.

Exposed, often windy, and colder than Asheville. Carry layers and navigation; check forest and road alerts.

Location & planning details →
Sunrise & sunset light

Sam Knob

Black Balsam area
About 2.5 miles round trip

A meadow approach and mountain summit make this an alternative to nearby Black Balsam. Sunrise/sunset suitability is our scenic recommendation, not an access-hours guarantee.

Not a 1.7-mile loop: the tourism guide lists a 2.5-mile route. Allow time for uneven terrain and the return.

Location & planning details →
Sunset & evening light

Devils Courthouse

Parkway MP 422.4
About 1 mile round trip; steep

A half-mile climb each way leads to a panoramic summit lookout. Short distance does not mean an easy walk.

Remain behind the viewing wall and on the trail; check access and conditions.

Location & planning details →
Sunset & evening light

Frying Pan Fire Tower

Parkway MP 409.6 · Forest Service Road 450
About 1.5 miles round trip

Walk uphill from the dirt pull-off to the historic tower and mountain views.

Do not block the gate or assume you can drive up. Check tower restrictions; exposed stairs are unsuitable in lightning, ice, or strong wind.

Location & planning details →
Morning light & sunset color

Rough Ridge

Grandfather Mountain area · longer day trip
About 1.2 miles round trip on the listed route

Rocky overlooks and boardwalk views on the Tanawha Trail. Better treated as a farther-away outing, not a quick Asheville stop.

Stay on the boardwalk and marked trail. Choose your viewpoint for the season rather than assuming a direct sunset view.

Location & planning details →
Sunset skyline

Downtown parking garages

Wall Street, Rankin Avenue & Harrah’s Cherokee Center garages
City option; viewing access not guaranteed

Upper decks are reported by visitors as places to catch skyline and mountain light. They are working parking facilities, not designated scenic overlooks.

Use only publicly accessible areas where viewing is permitted; obey signs and staff, stay out of traffic, and never climb barriers. Parking fees may apply.

Location & planning details →
Sunset

Location & planning details →
Sunset; sunrise potential

Bearwallow Mountain

Bearwallow Gap · Henderson County
About 2 miles round trip; moderate

A summit meadow with nearly 360-degree views. Conserving Carolina specifically recommends the hike for sunsets; the broad panorama also makes it a sunrise candidate.

Do not approach through Gerton while Bearwallow Mountain Road restrictions remain. Follow Conserving Carolina’s directions. This is a working farm: leash dogs and give cattle space.

Location & planning details →
Sunrise & evening mountain light

Mount Pisgah summit

Parkway Mount Pisgah area
About 2.6 miles round trip; steep sections

Climb to the summit viewing platform for mountain layers and morning light. A good option when you want a real hike rather than a roadside stop.

Allow generous climbing time and bring a headlamp. Use the viewing platform; the summit communications tower is not a visitor attraction.

Location & planning details →
Sunrise

Pounding Mill Overlook

Parkway MP 413.2
Drive-up

A sunrise pick recommended by NPS, with layered mountains and Looking Glass Rock in the landscape. Low valley fog can add to the morning scene.

Arrive before the light develops and check Parkway access. Cloud cover can hide the view.

Location & planning details →
Sunrise & sunset

Mills River Overlook

Parkway MP 404.5
Drive-up

Views on both sides of the Parkway make this an NPS-recommended option for either sunrise or sunset.

Use the designated overlook and choose the viewing side that suits the sun’s seasonal angle. Check road conditions before leaving.

Location & planning details →
Morning & evening landscape light

Buck Spring Gap Overlook

Parkway MP 407.6 · Mount Pisgah side road
Drive-up; optional short walk

A valley view near the former Buck Spring Lodge site. Our pick for golden light on the mountains; a direct view of the sun is not guaranteed.

Check the access road and stay on designated paths if exploring the historic lodge site.

Location & planning details →
Morning & evening landscape light

Looking Glass Rock Overlook

Parkway · near the Pisgah Forest section
Drive-up

Watch changing light on the distinctive rock face and the surrounding forest. This is a scenic-light option rather than a promise of an unobstructed sun on the horizon.

The roadside overlook is different from the much longer hike to Looking Glass Rock’s summit. Check Parkway access.

Location & planning details →
Morning light & sunrise potential

Glassmine Falls Overlook

Parkway MP 361.2 · north of Craggy Gardens
Drive-up; short path to another view

An eastward valley outlook for early light, with a distant waterfall after wet weather. Sunrise visibility depends on the season and ridges.
