Waste Disposal Guide
A practical disposal, recycling, and donation guide for the stuff you’re ready to get rid of.
Start with your service area
City pickup options apply to Asheville sanitation customers. An Asheville mailing address alone doesn’t confirm city service. Outside that service, use your waste hauler or county drop-off facilities.
Checked October 6, 2026. Check official schedules, holiday closures, fees, and acceptance rules before making a trip.
Paint & household chemicals
Take liquid paint, solvents, and household chemicals to the county landfill during scheduled TV/Paint/household hazardous waste events—not an ordinary drop-off day.
Paint and related flammable liquids: $2/gallon, up to 20 gallons/week. Household pesticides: no charge. Business hazardous waste is not accepted.
County acceptance & fees →Batteries & automotive fluids
County recycling accepts lead-acid batteries and automotive fluids. Rechargeable batteries are accepted during household hazardous waste events. For other battery types, ask Solid Waste before bringing them.
Call 828-250-5462 for the right drop-off route and any limits.
County recycling guide →Electronics, TVs & monitors
Use the county electronics program; check the event schedule before loading your vehicle.
TVs, monitors, and laptops: $10 each. Other residential electronics are generally free; commercial electronics are charged by weight. Call for large loads.
Electronics rules & fees →Furniture, mattresses & appliances
City sanitation customers can request bulky-item or appliance collection. Call 828-251-1122 or use the Asheville App before setting items at the curb.
Outside city service? Ask your hauler about pickup or contact County Solid Waste for drop-off instructions and fees.
City pickup instructions →Leaves, limbs & yard waste
City yard-waste pickup runs every other week. Set out by 7 a.m. Monday of your collection week. Use approved paper bags or labeled reusable containers; no plastic bags.
Limbs: maximum 4 feet long and 6 inches thick. Contractor-cut brush, land-clearing piles, and grass clippings are not collected. County yard-waste disposal has fees.
City preparation & schedule →Renovation debris & building materials
The county landfill has designated construction/debris and recycling areas. Call ahead about your materials; separate reusable items for donation.
Residential pickup/van/small-trailer loads: $53.50/ton, $10 minimum. Special materials can have different charges or require arrangements. Cover and secure your load.
Landfill disposal instructions →Everyday recycling & tricky items
Use AVL Collects to check your city collection calendar and look up how to dispose of individual items. County recycling guidance covers drop-off and materials accepted.
Keep plastic bags, foam packaging, and window/mirror glass out of county mixed recycling. Clean, empty plastic bags may go to participating retail collection bins.
City calendar & item lookup →Donate usable furniture & home goods
